Dear Friends and Neighbors,
After much prayerful consideration, and encouragement from many of you, I have decided to seek the Republican nomination for the Board of Supervisors in Powhatan’s majestic 5th District.
I wanted you to be among the first to know.
I have had the privilege these past 3 ½ years of serving on the school board providing solid, common sense, leadership. It has been my honor to serve as chairman, both last year and this year. I feel like I have helped make a difference and have done my best to earn your support by always doing what I feel is right. My goal with every decision I make is to honor you, my family and God.
Like you, I have seen first-hand, the impact of the current economic climate. I have had to reduce my budget at work and at home. As Chairman of the School Board, we have reduced our budget significantly over the past two budget cycles. In fact, our budget is now less than it was before we opened Flat Rock Elementary School. The school division has reduced actual expenses by about 10% over the past two years, resulting in layoffs of teachers, instructional assistants, support staff and central office positions. Let me assure you, these decisions were not easy to make.
While the school board responsibly took steps to become more efficient and reduce expenditures, the county seems to continue with unnecessary spending and conduct business as if everything is fine.
The Board of Supervisors is out of touch with the fine citizens of this great County. The economic times we are living through require each of us to reassess, re-budget, and recalculate. The Board of Supervisors needs to acknowledge that these are trying times and make adjustments, not simply continue to spend money like everything is fine.
Necessary, core functions of government need to be the priority, not feel-good buildings and programs that are nice but not necessary. We should not be forced to increase class size and lay off teachers, for example, while we are building a huge, over-sized firehouse for more than $5 ½ million. If you have not seen the new firehouse/safety building being constructed right behind Henry’s Market, I suggest you drive by and take a look. I think you will as shocked by this as I am. Most people realize the old firehouse there needed to be renovated or replaced, but I have not talked to anyone that believes the huge, mega firehouse/safety building should have been built. I have even talked to volunteer firefighters who think the building is outrageous. This is just one example of the “spend as if there is no economic downturn” attitude of the Board of Supervisors.
I love this community. It has been a blessing for Julie and I to raise our girls in Powhatan County. It has been my honor to represent the citizens of the 5th District on the School Board these past 3 ½ years and I ask for your support as I seek to serve on the Board of Supervisors.
I hope we have an opportunity to visit or talk by phone soon. With a new, larger 5th District, I will need lots of help this summer and fall to reach out to our friends and neighbors. Thank you so much and may God continue to bless Powhatan County.
Sincerely,
Tim Gresham
